If you have ever thought about putting a limit in place with your loved one — and then talked yourself out of it because it felt cruel — you are not alone. Most families who come to me have been wrestling with this exact tension for months, sometimes years. They know, on some level, that what they are doing is not working. But the moment they consider changing course, a voice in their head says: Who am I to tell them what I will and won't do? Isn't that abandonment? Isn't that selfish?

The short answer is no. Not even close.

Boundaries with an addicted loved one are not selfish. They are not walls meant to keep someone out. When they are set with clarity and maintained with consistency, limits are one of the most loving, courageous, and honest things a family member can offer. Where the 'Selfish' Story Comes From

The belief that limits are selfish usually has a straightforward origin: love. What Boundaries Actually Do (It Is Not What You Think)

A lot of families come into this work thinking a boundary is a way to control their loved one's behavior. Set the rule, enforce the consequence, and hopefully they'll stop using.

That framing puts too much weight on the boundary and sets you up for disappointment.

A boundary is not a lever that controls someone else. It is a decision about what you will do, what you will allow in your own life and home, and what you will no longer participate in. The difference matters enormously.

When you say, "I will not give you money that I believe will go toward drugs or alcohol," you are not controlling your loved one. You are simply being honest about what you can live with. They can still make any choice they want. You are just no longer agreeing to fund it.

That is not selfish. That is integrity.

Boundaries also do something else that often goes unsaid: they give your loved one more accurate feedback about reality. When the consequences of active addiction are consistently softened by family members, the person using gets a distorted picture. They may not feel the full weight of where things stand. First, the absence of boundaries has not pulled your loved one closer to recovery — it has often kept them comfortable enough to keep using. Staying available for every crisis has not created the change you hoped for. That is not a criticism; it is just an honest look at what has actually been happening.

Second, relationships built on one person endlessly accommodating another person's destructive behavior are not actually close. They can feel necessary — even intense — but that intensity is often crisis-based, not connection-based. Real closeness requires honesty. Limits are part of honest relationship.

Third, and most practically: when families get grounded, stop enabling, and start holding consistent limits, their loved ones do not typically disappear. What often happens is that the dynamic shifts. Sometimes slowly. Sometimes painfully. But a family member who is clear about what they will and will not accept is often more influential over time, not less.

Loving Someone Does Not Mean Accepting Everything

Consider how this works in other areas of life. A parent who loves a child still says no. A good friend tells you the truth even when it is uncomfortable. A doctor who cares about a patient does not prescribe whatever the patient asks for. Love and limits coexist in every healthy relationship. The idea that love requires unlimited tolerance is not love — it is enmeshment.

Enmeshment, in this context, means your sense of peace and safety has become tied to your loved one's behavior. When they are okay, you are okay. When they are not, you are not. You have lost the separation between your life and theirs. And in that state, the motivation to keep them comfortable — even at your own expense — feels like love because it is the only way you can feel okay.

Breaking that pattern is not abandonment. It is recovery — for you.

How to Know If Your Limits Are Coming from Love

Here is a simple way to check yourself: ask whether the limit you are setting is about controlling your loved one, or about protecting yourself and your home.

A fear-based or punitive limit sounds like: "I'm not helping you until you stop using." It is a demand disguised as a boundary, with the goal of forcing a behavior change.

A love-based limit sounds like: "I love you, and I can't keep paying your rent when I know the money isn't going toward rent. That doesn't mean I've given up on you — it means I'm being honest with you."

The difference is not just in the words. It is in your internal state when you say it.

Some helpful questions to ask yourself before setting or communicating a limit:

  • Am I saying this out of anger, or out of clarity?
  • Is this something I can actually follow through on, or am I just threatening?
  • Does this limit protect me, or is it designed to punish them?
  • Would I be comfortable saying this calmly, without escalating?

If you can answer those honestly, you will usually know whether what you are holding is a limit or a reaction.
